Annual Historical Educator & History Buff's Enrichment Field Trip 2025

Field Trip takes place July 10th, 2025 from 11:00 am - 5:15 pm
PURPOSES OF CLASS
To enrich knowledge of the history of the Maumee River and historical information about Downtown Toledo
To observe firsthand the riverbanks/development of Toledo and its ports, while riding in a mock vintage canal boat
To acknowledge the important role of the Great Lakes in our regional, national and global history.
For presentations to focus on the early history of Toledo’s geographic location in respect to its growth and development.
To appreciate the significance of the maritime history of the North American Great Lakes
To tour and discover the role of tugboats and freighters
To explore resources available which teachers may use with their classes, including interactive exhibits to engage students in simulating skills/tasks on vessels
To explore topics aligned with Ohio’s Learning Standards
To present ideas and topics for investigation by students
To examine artifacts and documents of historical significance

1:30 Disembark the Sandpiper
1:50 Check-in at the Maritime Museum
2:00 Tour of the Shoonmaker freighter and Ohio tugboat

3:30 Guided tour of the National Museum of the Great Lakes,
Schoonmaker; Ohio tugboat
5:00 Evaluation; receive certificate of attendance
5:15 Dismiss

Notes for Field Trip:
Wear comfortable, non-slip, close-toed shoes.
Access to the boats are on steep gangways and there are steep, narrow stairs.
The deck is not a smooth surface.
